Project focus
Ensure that users can safely and effectively wear, fit, adjust, and use over-the-counter hearing aids via app onboarding instructions.
Challenges
As an over-the-counter product, the hearing aids' onboarding needed to be descriptive enough to provide guidance comparable to that of a traditional audiologist without being too long or complex.
Clinical team experience indicated that setting up and learning how to use hearing aids for the first time can be an overwhelming and stressful experience.
From prior research, we knew that users may be impatient to experiment with the app and unwilling to engage with onboarding content for long.
Solutions
Used simple language, short sentences, and limited text per screen to accommodate short attention spans and make content easily digestible.
Included reassuring language and celebratory moments when possible to help ease user anxiety or stress.
Collaborated with UX designers, human factors engineers, and user researchers to simplify and prioritize content based on formative user study results.
