Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds Owner’s Guide
Project focus
Clearly describe Bose’s new Immersive Audio feature and its settings.
Challenges
Immersive Audio sounded different and used different terminology than other competitor spatial audio features. Because of this, setting descriptions needed to be understandable to both users who had no prior experience with spatial audio and those with an existing mental model.
User research indicated that spatial audio features could potentially cause disorientation for some users under certain conditions (e.g., specific spatial audio settings combined with certain physical actions).
Solutions
Started section with high-level marketing positioning to accommodate users unfamiliar with the core use case and benefits of spatial audio.
Chose a table as the clearest format to describe the perceived effect and use case for each setting. Within setting descriptions, emphasized key phrases that distinguished Immersive Audio from other competitor features (e.g., "stereo speakers," "recenter on your position").
Specified ideal use cases for each setting to help users understand when to use them and how to avoid potential disorientation.
